The Herdsmen Tournament (Torneo dei Butteri) is a cherished event to the Tolfetans. The equestrian competition features local horses (tolfetan horses) and herdsmen, once called shepherds.
This tournament was first held in mid-60s, and immediately attracted many tourists and onlookers. Actually, the first edition took place in 1968 during the festivities in honour of St Egidio, patron saint of Tolfa.
Even today, the Herdsmen Tournament is held the last week of July, whereas the Regional Herdsmen Tournament is held on 15 August every year.
The participating teams – which are made up of three knights each – representing all the Tolfa’s districts are: Sughera, Lizzera, Casalaccio, Rocca, Capuccini, Bassano, Poggiarello, and Battaglione. The evening before the District Tournament people celebrate in every district, whereas the evening after the Tournament celebrations take place only in the winning district.
